🕉️ Story 1 — The Non-Believer’s Confrontation with God
In a small village, there lived a man named Ratan. He was a non-believer. He did not visit temples. He did not perform rituals. His orthodox neighbors were scornful of him. “You are an amateur at faith,” they said. “You will never find peace.”
Ratan felt woeful. But he did not falter. For my part, he thought, I believe in kindness, not rituals. The other day, he saw a young boy crying. The boy’s family had no food. Ratan had only a meagre earning. But he shared what he had.
That night, a storm began to erupt. The winds coiled around the village like a snake. The orthodox priest rushed to the temple to pray. But Ratan stayed outside, helping people evacuate their homes. He did not falter even when the rain deafened his ears.
As the storm erupted with full fury, a tree fell on the temple. The priest was trapped. Ratan ran to help. He pulled the priest out. The priest looked at him with surprise. “You saved me,” he said. “But you are a non-believer. Why?”
Ratan smiled. “Because human life is more important than any belief. Secularism teaches us that all human beings are equal. We do not need to confront each other over religion. We need to confront suffering together.”
The priest was intriguingly moved. He had always thought that only the orthodox were righteous. But here was a non-believer who had saved his life.
That night, Ratan had a dream. A divine light appeared before him. A voice spoke, soft as a lilt. “You call yourself a non-believer,” the voice said. “But you believed in kindness. You believed in service. You believed in every human being. That is the truest form of faith.”
Ratan woke up. He was no longer a non-believer in the way others defined it. He had confronted his own doubts and found a deeper truth. He realized that God is not found in temples or rituals. God is found in every act of love.
The next morning, the entire village was in mourning. Many homes were destroyed. But no lives were lost because of Ratan’s courage. The orthodox priest announced, “Ratan was called a non-believer. But today, I say he is the truest believer I have ever met. He did not falter when chaos erupted. He did not wait for rituals. He acted. That is the indigenous wisdom of our land. That is true secularism.”
The village rebuilt itself. Ratan became a respected figure. People learned that to confront a non-believer with hatred is foolish. To confront them with love is divine. And for my part, the priest would later say, “I was an amateur at understanding God. Ratan taught me that God does not live in temples. God lives in the hearts of those who serve.”
The fable of the non-believer who saved the orthodox priest spread far and wide. People learned that faith is not about what you believe. It is about how you live. And that is the most beautiful lilt of all.

🇮🇳 Story 2 — The Indigenous Spirit of Secularism
India, 1947. The nation was in mourning. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, had been assassinated. The orthodox and the secular, the believers and the non-believers, all stood together in mourning. A young grandmotherly figure in soft slippers stood among the crowd, tears streaming down her crinkly face.
Her name was Amrita. She had been a freedom fighter. She had seen the British coil their oppression around India. She had seen violence erupt between orthodox communities. But she had also seen the indigenous spirit of secularism that had united the nation.
The other day, before Gandhi’s death, Amrita had met a young non-believer named Arif. Arif was an amateur at politics. He did not understand the complexities of faith. But he had a pure heart. “Why do people fight over religion?” he had asked Amrita. “Is it not enough that we are all human?”
Amrita had smiled. “Secularism is our indigenous gift to the world, Arif. It does not mean we have no faith. It means we respect all faiths. It means we confront hatred with love. It means we confront division with unity.”
Now, standing in the mourning crowd, Amrita remembered those words. Tears coiled down her cheeks. She saw Arif in the crowd. He looked woeful. His shoulders were drooping. His heart seemed to falter.
“Do not falter, Arif,” Amrita said, taking his hand. “Gandhi ji taught us that the only way to confront evil is with truth. The only way to confront hatred is with love. The only way to confront division is with secularism. This is our indigenous wisdom. This is our strength.”
Arif looked up. His eyes were red from crying. “But Amma, the violence will erupt again. The orthodox will fight the non-believers. How can we stop it?”
Amrita pointed at the crowd. “Look around you. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, believers, non-believers—all standing together in mourning. This is the indication that we are destined for unity. For my part, I believe that secularism is not just a word. It is a promise. A promise that every human will be treated with dignity, regardless of their faith.”
The other day, a group of orthodox leaders had tried to confront Arif. They called him a non-believer. They said he had no place in their vision of India. But Arif had not faltered. He had stood his ground, nonchalantly confident in his beliefs.
“I am a non-believer,” he had said. “But I believe in this nation. I believe in its indigenous spirit of secularism. I believe that a meagre beginning can lead to a great future. And I will not let anyone take that belief away from me.”
The crowd listened. The orthodox leaders were dumbfounded. They had expected him to falter. But he had not. His voice had a lilt that was flawlessly sincere. He had confronted their hatred with truth, and the truth had won.
Years later, Arif became a teacher. He taught children about secularism. He told them the story of Amrita, the grandmotherly figure who had taught him to never falter. He told them that the indigenous spirit of India is not about forcing everyone to believe the same thing. It is about respecting every belief. It is about allowing every voice to be heard. It is about letting every human live with dignity.
One day, a student asked him, “Sir, what is the most important lesson you have learned?”
Arif smiled. “I learned that a non-believer can be the most faithful patriot. I learned that secularism is not the absence of faith. It is the presence of respect. I learned that when hatred erupts, we must confront it not with more hatred, but with love. And I learned that even in mourning, there is hope. For my part, I will never forget that. And neither should you.”
The fable of Arif, the non-believer who became a symbol of secularism, spread across the nation. People learned that patriotism is not about flags and anthems alone. It is about the courage to confront hatred. It is about the wisdom to respect every faith. And it is about the indigenous spirit of India that has always believed in unity in diversity. That is the truest form of deshbhakti. That is the most beautiful lilt of freedom.

Believer (His voice woeful, his eyes red from crying):
You call yourself a non-believer. You do not pray. You do not visit temples. Yet you stand here in mourning with us. Why? What gives you the right to share our grief? For my part, I think you are an amateur at understanding sorrow.
Non-Believer (His voice calm, his eyes steady):
I may be a non-believer in God. But I am not a non-believer in humanity. Secularism does not ask me to share your faith. It asks me to share your pain. The other day, I watched violence erupt between our communities. I saw orthodox leaders confront each other with hatred. I chose to confront that hatred with silence and solidarity. That is my indigenous way of mourning. That is my truth. Do not confront me with anger. Confront me with understanding instead.
🗣️ Dialogue 2 — Comedy | Two orthodox men argue about secularism and a non-believer’s drum

Pundit Ji (Shaking his head, his voice scornful):
This secularism is destroying our culture! The other day, a non-believer played his drum during our festival. His lilt was flawlessly annoying! The sound deafened our prayers. For my part, I think we should confront these non-believers and send them away! Let them keep their meagre drums and their crinkly beards to themselves!
Maulvi Saheb (Sitting nonchalantly, unimpressed):
Pundit Ji, your orthodox thinking is more woeful than his drum. Secularism does not ask us to silence others. It asks us to listen. That non-believer played his drum not to annoy you, but to express his joy. His lilt was his prayer. For my part, I would rather hear his drum than your complaints. Now stop this confrontation. Let the coil of hatred untangle. Let us celebrate our indigenous diversity. That is the true spirit of India.
