Hello everyone! 😊 My name is Ashwani Sharma, Director of Mission Abacus Pvt. Ltd., Jaipur (India). Today I want to talk about one question that almost every parent asks me:
“Sir, my child is weak in Algebra. Should I put him/her in Abacus class or Vedic Maths class? Which one helps more in Algebra?”
The answer is not “one is better than the other”. The truth is – both are AMAZING, but they help in COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ways. 🧠💡 If you understand the difference, you can give your child DOUBLE benefit!
So let’s compare them fairly, in very simple English, with real examples. Ready? 🚀
First – What is Abacus? 🧮
Abacus is a 5000-year-old tool (yes, even older than Vedic Maths!). Children move beads with fingers and create a picture of numbers inside their brain. After 8–12 months of practice, many kids close their eyes and do calculations happen on a “mental abacus” inside their head. This is called Mental Arithmetic.
Benefits for Algebra:
- Super strong number sense → children “feel” numbers instead of just remembering.
- Amazing visualization power → the brain starts seeing numbers like pictures.
- Left + Right brain both become active → concentration, memory, speed everything increases.
- Place value becomes crystal clear → tens, hundreds, thousands feel natural.
- Negative numbers, decimals, big additions/subtractions become child’s play.
How does this help in Algebra? When your child sees “x + 7 = 15”, an Abacus-trained brain instantly visualizes moving beads and finds x = 8 in seconds – without writing anything! Even complicated linear equations feel like a game.
Real story: One of my students in Dubai (9 years old) solved 50 algebra questions in 4 minutes in a national competition – all mentally using Abacus technique! 🏆
Now – What is Vedic Maths? 📿
Vedic Maths comes from ancient Indian scriptures. It has 16 sutras (short tricks) and 13 sub-sutras. No tool, only mind-blowing shortcuts!
Benefits for Algebra:
- Vertically & Crosswise method → solves any multiplication in 2–3 seconds.
- Base method → solves big number calculations near 100, 1000, etc., super fast.
- Algebraic proofs of sutras → children understand WHY a trick works (very important for higher maths).
- Instant squaring, square roots, cube roots.
- Special techniques for simultaneous equations, quadratic equations, factorization.
How does this help in Algebra? Example: (x + 5)(x + 3) Normal method → FOIL → x² + 8x + 15 Vedic method (Vertically & Crosswise) → answer in 5 seconds without writing anything! Children start loving Algebra because it becomes “magic tricks” instead of boring expansion.
Real story: A 12-year-old girl from London who joined our Vedic Maths classes scored 98/100 in her GCSE Algebra paper. She said, “Sir, Vedic sutras made Algebra feel like cheating – but legally!” 😂

My Honest Recommendation (15+ years experience speaking):
- Age 5–8 years → Start with Abacus first 🧮 Reason: Builds rock-solid foundation, visualization, concentration. Algebra will become very easy later.
- Age 9–15 years → Learn both! Do 8–12 months Abacus + start Vedic Maths side by side. Result = Unbeatable in Algebra, Maths Olympiads, school exams, IIT-JEE, SAT, GCSE everything!
- If child already 12+ and weak only in Algebra → Start Vedic Maths immediately. You will see marks jump in 2–3 months!
